Beyond the Job Boards

Some surveys say that between 60% and 85% of jobs vacancies are filled – not via online job boards – but by word of mouth.

So, it makes sense to spread the word that you are seeking new employment opportunities. Try …

  • sending out speculative cover letters (also called "broadcast letters")
  • contacting companies that aren't advertising vacancies, but you have reason to believe that your skills and experience would be useful to them.
  • letting your own network contacts (e.g., LinkedIn) know about your skills and availability.
  • advertising yourself in industry publications (this can be done without using your name in the ad).
  • following up (via letter and/or telephone) on previous applications or contacts with recruiters.

Read newspapers’ business sections and look for companies that are expanding or have landed a big order. They could be looking for new people. Contact someone there; get them to suggest you send your CV; send your CV and a cover letter suggesting that you meet; follow up until you get a meeting scheduled.

Pro-CV’s letter packages include many templates that you can use for these scenarios. The Pro-CV Letter Package includes speculative letters that are customised to your skills, experience, and personality. The Pro-CV Letter Templates Package comes with every CV we write and this one includes follow-up letter templates.

Posting your CV to all the possible job boards is certainly not a waste of time, but if you want to take your job search up a notch, go beyond the traditional job board.
